Background:

Silverdale School was opened in 1956 and a sixth-form was introduced in 1977. It is located on a single site in 17 acres of grounds in the south-west of Sheffield. Work-experience is available for all pupils, in addition to work-shadowing in Year 12. Pupils study at least one foreign language to GCSE and can choose from French, German and Spanish, with intensive language courses in each country. Work-experience in Europe is available, and Latin is also offered. Comenius link with Czech Republic; north-south link with Durban in South Africa. There are two ski trips each year, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is available. Regular drama and music productions are staged. There is a school choir, orchestra, wind band and brass group. Annual mulitcultural festival. Specialist language college status. Over-subscribed, with 1.2 applications per place. Investor in People status; DfES achievement award; Leading Edge status.
