Background:
Built in 1874, Marsh Lane is a typical stone-built village school situated in a rural area on hills to the north of Chesterfield, overlooking the Rother Valley and close to a nature reserve. The school has four classrooms, a library, office, kitchen, cloakrooms and toilets and separate 'large yards' for infants and juniors with benches, flower tubs, games and garden areas. There is no hall so community facilities are used for concerts and productions. The school has been making 'good progress' with standard assessment tests since its Ofsted inspection in 1996. The school encourages sporting activities and celebrates success in assembly. Each year the school sponsors several charities, which recently included Barnados, Sheffield Children's Hospital, MacMillan Cancer and Kosovo appeals.
