Background:
This open-plan middle school was built in 1974. It is situated in Crosspool, in the western suburbs of Sheffield. The ward in which the school stands is very advantaged economically and socially compared with the national picture, although about a quarter of pupils come from less well-favoured neighbouring wards. The over-subscribed school stands on the site of Tapton Hall stables, formerly used by the Sheffield police and once owned by the Shore family. The different levels of the site make it interesting architecturally. Facilities include a central craft area, a library and resource area and a music/visual aids room. 'Active' parental interest in the process of education is encouraged. 'Children are expected to work hard and attainment is generally high.' Support staff are available to assist those with special educational needs. Children who show an aptitude may be able to learn a musical instrument, and there is an orchestra, choir, handbell group, wind band and recorder groups.
