Background:
Built around 1960, this suburban Sheffield school overlooks the Derbyshire hills from 'pleasant, extensive' grounds. Fifteen years ago the school was in danger of closing, but it is now 'thriving'. The 'happy and caring' school serves a catchment area of mixed private and council housing extending across the south-east of Sheffield, and is over-subscribed, with two applications for every place. The school initiated the Primary Citizenship Internet Project, which links schools and police across the UK and Ireland. The launch of the website was carried out at the school in October 1999 by the Secretary of State for Education, David Blunkett. The project aims to increase pupils' self-respect and their respect for the values and beliefs of others. The school also has links with schools in Athens, Naples, Parma and Dublin through the Comenius European programme. Parents are invited to attend class masses and assemblies. Once a week, a draw is made in assembly from donated money, to raise funds for school equipment.
