Background:
The original Holgate School was founded by the Archbishop of York, Robert Holgate, in 1546 in Hemsworth. It was re-organised by the charity commissioners in 1888 and moved to Barnsley. All pupils are encouraged to use its well-equipped library. Computers are available for individual use, giving full access to the school and Borough-wide learning network. The school runs many clubs and societies associated with sports, music and dance. The school aims to enable every child to reach his or her potential in a caring and supportive environment.
