Background:

Rossington St Joseph's was founded in 1972 and is a 'modern' building located in a former mining village about six miles south east of Doncaster. The majority of children come from the immediate area, although some travel from outlying villages. There is high unemployment in the area. The school has a 'large' hall and was built around a central paved quad, which has been converted into an environmental area with a pond and a fountain. There are eight classrooms as well as a nursery with its own play area. The school was extended in 1991, but remains over-subscribed today. A 'beautiful' stained glass window designed by children and staff for the 21st anniversary of the school features in the reception area. A 'good range' of extra-curricular activities is available to pupils including two football teams, training in basketball, and country dancing during the summer, which is open to all pupils. Children are given opportunities to take part in football matches against other schools. There are also two chess teams, a choir, an orchestra and recorder groups. St Joseph's offers children the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. Educational trips are 'regularly' taken and trips to the theatre are a 'feature of school life'. The harvest festival is an 'important' event and provides 'an opportunity for children to help those less fortunate'. The proceeds from the annual Christmas concerts are also used to help others, and donations are given to various charities. The school has a very clearly stated mission to enable each child 'to reach their full potential in the light of the teachings of Christ and the values portrayed in the Gospels'.
