Background:
Opened in 1949, the school is situated in a large area of local authority rented housing not far from the centre of Rotherham. Pupils have made a garden and planted bulbs and wild flowers on the grounds. The 'broad and balanced' curriculum is complemented by a 'wide' range of extra-curricular sporting, creative and performing activities. Support is offered to the above average number of pupils with special educational needs. The musical tradition is particularly 'strong': all children play an instrument and there is a 'thriving' brass band. Pupils perform in dance and musical productions for the local community. Children make an effort to support local charities. The school has wider links through its partnership with schools in Italy, Norway and Sweden, with which pupils exchange letters and audio and video tapes.
