Background:
The red brick school building opened in 1912 and is built around a quadrangle area. Despite the school's age it is a 'very pleasant, stimulating, well-maintained and very well resourced school.' The grounds consist of three terraced areas with established trees and flowerbeds, an enclosed games area and an 'extensive' playing field surrounded by a naturalised area. The school is situated to the south west of Doncaster in a 'very deprived area' of high unemployment, following the closure of the local coal mine 15 years ago. There is a 'wide variety' of extra-curricular activities including drama, gardening, orchestra, choir, information and communications technology and a variety of sports clubs. Community and business links are 'strongly woven' into the school curriculum and extra-curricular activites. The school is 'actively engaged' with the community to develop appropriate resources for the children and local residents.
