Background:
Saltersgate is a three-form entry school which was built in 1961. It shares a site with its main feeder school and 'enjoys considerable parental and community support'. The school has established a 'thriving' sports programme in out-of-school hours. Recent achievements in local and national competitions have further boosted pupil involvement in the activities offered. The school holds the under-10 Doncaster football trophy and reached the finals of similar local competitions for different age groups. The school'swimming team enjoyed considerable success during 1998/99, winning the local championship. The girls swimming team were regional winners of the English Schools Swimming Association competition and finalists in the national ESSA event. After-hours clubs are 'flourishing' with many pupils gaining gymnastic awards. Music is a 'key feature' of the school, instrumental tuition is offered and performances are enjoyed from the school orchestra and choir. The school contributes to charities on a regular basis, the most recent being to the Richard Foundation which is seeking to build a children's hospice in the South Yorkshire area.
