Background:

Epworth County Primary school was officially opened in 1982 as a purpose built semi-open-plan school. It is situated next to South Axholme Comprehensive and there are 'very strong' links between the two institutions, both academically and pastorally. The school'serves a wide socio-economic area, known as the Isle of Axholme. It is the largest school in the area and the only primary serving the Isle and was originally built to serve the Epworth area, but in recent years the school has attracted pupils from further afield. The school is situated in 'very attractive' grounds with 'ample' playing field facilities. A group of parents have a plan for long-term improvement including quiet seating areas in the playground and a sensory garden. Facilities include a main hall, four main teaching bases and a well-stocked library, and a purpose built information technology room was recently opened. Extra-curricular activities include football, book club, netball, maypole/country dancing, rounders and circuit training. The school also has a 'growing reputation' for music. Many pupils are involved in the school orchestra and Key Stage 2 pupils sing in the choir. An equal opportunities policy operates in sport and there is occasionally a girls' football team. There are 'excellent' community links and the school is 'renowned' for its involvement in community events. It is 'known for its traditional outlook with a modern attitude, where manners, self-discipline, respect for all and positive outlook are greatly encouraged'.
