Background:
Birdwell Primary is situated on the main road running through the old mining village of Birdwell, to the west of Barnsley. A mixture of private and council housing surrounds it. The school was originally built in 1894 and underwent significant extension in 1968 when there were a greater number of pupils. The number on role declined in the early nineties, and has risen steadily since then. There are now seven classrooms (one for each year group) and a privately run playgroup that serves the local community. The school has 'extensive, landscaped' grounds to the rear. Sports include football, netball, cricket, rounders, hockey, and tennis. There is a 'well equipped' gymnasium and a 'large' playing field. After school clubs include football, gymnastics and drama and educational visits are regarded as a stimulus for classroom work. There are close community links and parental support is a 'strength' of the school. Birdwell is a friendly, caring school and the main aim of the teachers and governing body is 'to make Birdwell the best school possible'.
